Artist's Comments

This is a study of an area of valencia that I did a year or so ago on a University art trip :)
I really liked it at the time, but almost comletely forgot about it because it was buried in a random skecthbook. I finally got around to scanning it, and editing out the page fold because of my upcoming final show.
Thought I'd stick it up here....

oh, are they doing that weird tutor strike thing? They're doing that in my sister's Uni - at least there, they're marking all the work... just refusing to give the marks back to the uni, and therefore everyone graduates with an "ungraded" until the grades come back. *rolls eyes* I mean, I understand WHY they're doing it... 40% behind in pay, and they ask for 23 and are offered THREE. it's a smack in the face... but still, with everyone graduating this year, it's a bit of a shitter.

So.... is that what's going on with you too, or not? Man, I hope not... the whole situation sounds harsh as.

Btw, Grant tells me he LOVES this picture and would like it on his wall. I kinda agree, too. Shush to your tutors, this linework is wonderful.
The only bit I don't like is the people... I guess they're just a little... undefined compared to the buildings? but then people don't stand still for years, so eh... damn them. *laughs*

Wow, that's so many levels of retardedness >< I'd heard about the strikes, but none of my tutors are joining in it seems...
The figures were just to get scale more than anything else. They were drawn in about a few secons each as people walked past. I could send you a 300dpi version via email if you wanna print it A4 Photo quality? :)

ooh, that'd be nice, please do so! (: y'know my email, so... *grins*

Oh, incidentally... as soon as I left that last message about the uni strike? I went and checked my email, and I had one from my mum... one of the pieces of news was, apparently the strike is now over! So hurrah for that. It all worked out in the long run. XD

wow! just nosing about cos i recognised your name n read your RSOM entry (very emotional if you've got someone you'd wish that about...)

anyway i thought i'd comment on this because, well, it's brilliant (i have similar college art architecture sketches up here and they are NOWHERE NEAR as good :) )

its very detailed so it must have taken a while, and the colours look like they were put together thoughtfully, rather than just splashing on whatever you happened to have with you. it shows you really care about your artwork (much more than i did back then i guess!) anyway i guess winning RSOM means you've got plenty more artworks to care about now! hope you keep up and develop this style :)

*sneaks off to rest of gallery...*

^__^ Thanks so much!! This picture actually took about a solid afternoon of drawing. It was really lovely though, sitting in the square in the sun. The surroundings were so inspiring, and the situation so perfect, it was kindof hard *not* to spend a long time getting it right! XD
Hope you enjoy the rest of the gallery ^_~
Btw, I had a look at your gallery and found the architectural studies! :) Really nice stuff, your lines are looking easy and loose, and they describe forms really nicely. If you have a go at that sort of stuff again, I'd reccomend a technique with the colour, which is before you start on the lines, have a look at your surroundings, and put down large areas of colour where the light and shadow and different areas of the buildings are. Then add the lines afterwards :) It'll mean that when you do the colour you'll be more focused on capturing the atmosphere just right. Great work tho! :D
