Here's an illustrative I've done for my mum's birthday in a few days :) I figured it'd be nice to give her an original work.
It's my nameless guy once more, from the wordless comic I'm writing. I think I might end up making this the basis of one of the pages.
I'll be interested to see if the idea comes across okay ^_^ What do people think is going on?

As I haven't read the wordless short comic, here's my stab at the story: The train symbolises the monotony of mundane life while his backpack represents his desire to escape it. The train is floating and invisible, which is otherworldly enough, but because he's sleeping, he's missing this. In other words, there is wonder in his world, it just continually evades him.

More-or-less bang on! :D The landscape also represents the things he dreams of as an escape from his life, or in this case the things he's escaping to, because the story's about him running away.

Wow, I really love this! You certainly have captured the feeling of being on a long ride. Heck, I almost get motion sickness looking at it. XD And I like how it can almost thought of in several ways. My first impression was possibly that he's riding along and although in the upper picture there looks to be a storm going on, the calmer scenery seems to be that of the trip later on, after the storm. Yet, when I looked at it more, it seems that it could also be his dreams. Maybe it's a scene of where he's going for instance.

I also really like the stark shading done on the figure. I can tell that there must be some harsh lighting in the train/bus that he's in. And are those bags under his eyes? He's unshaven as well, so it really seems he's sleepy and probably almost nothing could disturb him. But that just enhances that feeling that he'll just feel groggy and possibly sick afterwards.

Wow, I really spoke too much. O_O Sorry! Lovely piece once again!

wooooow... breathtaking. the concept is so undone, and is executed perfectly! i love the dynamics, the harsh rain contrasting to the peaceful sleep and the vertigo of the hanging over a calm forest. i would love to have insight into this picture, but i'm sadly very 2-dimensional minded. all i can think of is that he's dreaming, of being weightless, or flying, or somesuch, of being somewhere else that's calmer and happier. he looks so darn worn out. the expressions and colors are just perfect. you really know how to execute a picture into an experience for the onlooker. thanks for sharing, your mom's very lucky!

I really love the concept behind this piece. it's so inspiring and I love the gesture you have him in also. He's so slouched and totally out of it. The way the view out of the windows seems so dark and metalic like while his surroundings are so nice and surreal. It's a wonderful piece and I really do enjoy looking at it.

he seems he is running away, seeking a place to be at peace. But unfortunatly it followed him, and he can feel it, an extra weight in his baggage.
He feels to tired he doesn't want to look for it, he doesn't want to fight back, though he can. Because is easier to lay there, having some extra weight than getting up and search among all the belongings for that unwanted object. He knows he must do it, if realy wants peace..........but...........is so confortable just to lay there, listening to the rain against the window......to the train wheels moving forward, always forward....................it kind of make you feel that............you're moving forward aswell.......
--------------------------
This what i imagine as i looks at your pic.........i saw it just like a movie in my head XD hahahahaha. Hope you had fun reading it

surrealism! yes! win!
as for what i think...if it were in a page of a graphic novel, i would probably see it as he's gonna be on the train for a long time, it's rainy and dark out, so he starts dreaming of some place nicer. maybe the forest behind his grandparents house or something. or maybe just that place that everyone goes to in their head to calm down that maybe came from seeing a photo or something. maybe he's been dreaming of this pace since he was little and he's now off to find it.
or, again, in a graphic novel, this could be used as a very good transition page.
my only problem with it (and this is just a little tweak here), is that i wish the character and the background were more interactive. like bring his hand down or that one tree up just a little so there's some overlapping. i mean, you might've kept them separated intentionally, but to me, it would add to the surreality of it if there's an actual definite foreground and background. i know that's just me being picky.
and this comment was made before reading other people's, so this is my personal first impression.

Damn... what a striking piece. I can't stop staring...

Brings back memories of that long commute to school, and dreaming I were somewhere less stinky and smelly than a bus full of wet people  I like how it's so subtle and so bizarre at the same time. Wow. :wow:

great image kinda reminds me of a dream i had once when i fell asleep on a long car trip. I drempt I was walking through this really silent forest, I jumped when i woke up the hum of the car was so loud compared to the absoloute silence of the dream.one of thoes strange in between feeling.

I as going to ask what the sign on the window said I just read the above comment. very clever i like!

slowly he slips into the world of dreams while riding the train. At least that's the impression it gives me, watching the views or in his case dreaming about it as the train, bus, etc...takes you to your distanation.

I like it! :D
